Working Skills: Vocational Services

Taking one’s place in a community job and providing the finances needed to make a life…that is the dream of every child as he or she grows into an adult. For individuals with developmental disabilities, the dream of employment is not as ready at hand. However, at VITAL Services we believe the people we care for have much to offer, and with a guiding hand they will learn the basics they need to be placed into community jobs and begin contributing to the world and to their own well-being.
Vocational Training Centers
VITAL Services operates two day vocational training centers in Lincoln, Nebraska. The main facility is located, together with our office headquarters, at 2605 Fairfield. The other facility is at 5045 Russell Circle. At these facilities, individuals learn the necessary skills—such as professionalism and attention to detail—for eventual placement into community employment.
Integrated Community Employment (ICE):
Once an individual with a developmental disability is placed into a community job, it is important to provide transitional and/or ongoing support to assure their success. We help the people we care for to assimilate and integrate into the workforce by providing a job coach. The people we serve work at supermarkets and provide cleaning services, among the other professions.
Vending
We purchased our first vending machine in 1999, and we now operate a complete vending route for pop and snacks in the city of Lincoln. The people we serve help us stock and collect money from the machines as a way of gaining positive interaction with the community, as well as wages.
